Garage Studio Apartment.

Yah, we might be a little crazy. (Or a lot crazy). But we are willing to sacrifice some comforts now for the sake of long term benefits. How does the saying go? Live like no one else now, so you can live like no one else later?

That’s what this is.

We converted our garage (and we live in Minnesota- hello insanely cold winters) into a studio apartment. Again.

We also did this at our previous house and now rent out both the house and the garage making that one property into 2 rental units.

it’s called house hacking and we wish we would have been wise enough to start on this path 12 years ago when we started venturing into home ownership. But instead of wishing away time, we are making those steps now. We are investing in property that is beneficial now and will continue to grow in assets over time to hopefully affect generations of our family.

You can see the full transformation in the “Garage Studio” Highlights on my Instagram but it’s been an entire summer of investing in the transformation. My husband always said that our cars don’t need homes and I totally agree. We love our investments to be rooted in assets and not liabilities so cars don’t hold as much value to us as homes do where the equity can build instead of depreciate. So, we want to maximize our space and thus, this is our 2nd garage renovation and currently our 3rd rental property that we own.

Our dream + goal is to have enough income properties to be able to give one to each child when they are older. And we are well on our way. And it’s neat to be able to provide hopefully great housing for people while we do it.

We are a great team too. Hubby pretty much runs everything in the real estate department since he is a realtor and I try to help with decor/design and also… watching the kids while he does all that.

We have some shared walls right now and share our driveway and space in some capacities. But we also have totally different units, front doors, and also- 2.5 acres to frolic around on. It’s kind of neat to open up your “space” to someone new and see what God can do in that.

You can check out some of the fun transformation pics below! But make sure to go on IG to see a few more before and afters! Enjoy!
